Goals
The goal of the Mayor’s Summer Youth Internship Program is to serve as a stepping stone and learning experience for young adults in the community. Internships will provide on the job experience and exposure to the world of work, as well as skill-building workshops and presentations from guest speakers.
The Program
Mayor’s Summer Youth Intern Program was launched as a pilot program this year. I was very excited to learn my application was accepted and looked forward the orientation meeting with Jennifer O’Leary, Director of Youth Services, at City Hall. Our small group of Newton business volunteers learned some guidelines for successful mentoring included an emphasize on increasing teen confidence and connectedness to adults and community. Mentors are encouraged to model professional behavior and hold the teens to a high level of professional standards. Jennifer reassured us that she would be available for questions and consultations during the six week period of the internship.
Meet Suriya Ramachandrababu, Intern Extraordinaire
After three delightful weeks of having Suriya working with me at Keller Williams Realty, I don’t know how I ever survived without him. Suriya came to my office with an interest in the real estate field and must admit he has taken to the job like a natural. I have given him variety of projects, both clerical and analytical. Suriya approaches all jobs, big and small, with the same goal oriented attitude. The amazing thing about this young man is his outstanding work ethic. Suriya is not clock watcher but he is always on time, in fact he needs to be reminded to take a lunch break and he is always willing to stay late if there is a job that needs to be done. Our office is lively and busy place which could for some be sometimes distracting. But Suriya fits right in working steadily, respecting those around him and always willing to pitch when needed.
