Putting on the Knits in West Newton is a haven for knitters. Don and Janet, the talented owners, greet shoppers with a warm yet confident air of accomplishment. Their shop displays many varied and beautiful finished pieces. Shop for your next project and find excellent choices of quality domestic and imported yarns and accessories to meet every budget.
Fellow knitters are ready to offer encouragement, compliments, and tips. My last visit was particularly satisfying. I came with six rows of a sweater I started, a disaster waiting to happen. Once I was properly instructed to change needle size, I begin to rip out the stitches. I have no patience for this. A nice lady I never met before eagerly offered to help me. I watched her with appreciation and gratitude as she explained, “I have always loved untangling knots.” We all have our strengths.
I am courageously forging ahead with my sweater knowing that in dark moments of twisted stitches and other such knitting hazards I have somewhere to go for help. Don and Janet lead the knitters’ club with wisdom and humor. With a kind of Zen approach to knitting, Don told me one day, “Choose materials you love and don’t be in a rush. Remember, the longer it takes you, the less money you’ll spend.”
Putting on the Knits is a local favorite and just one of the many reasons I love Newton.
